Adults are small, dark-bodied flies, typically measuring 2–4 mm in length, characterized by long, thread-like antennae and delicate, clear, Y-shaped veined wings.

The larvae are slender, legless, and translucent, reaching 5–7 mm in length. Their most diagnostic feature is a distinct, shiny black head capsule, which sets them apart from other soil-dwelling larvae.

They thrive in moist, dark environments rich in organic matter. Greenhouse conditions, particularly peat-based substrates, provide the perfect habitat for their continuous development.

The life cycle is temperature-dependent; under typical greenhouse conditions (20–25°C), the generation time from egg to adult is approximately 3 weeks.

What it damages
