How to identify

Pharyngomyia picta is a species of bot fly belonging to the family Oestridae. It is an obligate parasite of wild and captive ungulates, primarily deer species.

Adult flies are relatively large and covered in dense hairs, giving them a bee-like or bumblebee-like appearance. The "picta" in their name refers to the mottled or spotted pattern on their bodies.

As is characteristic of bot flies, the adult stage is short-lived and non-feeding, as the mouthparts are vestigial. The primary purpose of the adult phase is exclusively reproductive.

The species is viviparous, meaning the female deposits first-instar larvae directly into the nostrils of the host while in flight. This specialized method of infection is highly efficient.

The life cycle involves three larval stages, a pupal stage in the soil, and an adult stage. The larval growth occurs entirely within the nasal and pharyngeal cavities of the host.

What it damages

The primary victims of P. picta are deer and related ungulates. Larvae attach to the nasal mucous membranes, where they feed on host tissues and secretions.

The damage caused by these larvae includes chronic irritation, inflammation of the nasal passages, and swelling of the pharyngeal tissue, leading to significant discomfort for the animal.

Infested animals show reduced weight gain, poor overall condition, and loss of vitality. In extreme cases, high larval density can lead to airway obstruction and suffocation.

When it appears

The flight activity of adult P. picta occurs during the warm months, typically mid-to-late summer. During this time, adults are active in mating and seeking suitable hosts.

Warm and sunny conditions are preferred by the female flies for flight and egg-laying. Cool or windy weather significantly reduces their activity and reproductive success.

Once the larvae enter the host's nasal cavity, they begin their internal development phase, which spans across the autumn and winter months.

The larvae continue to grow throughout the winter, and by the following spring, mature third-instar larvae migrate towards the nostrils to be expelled.

Once expelled, they burrow into the soil to pupate, emerging as adults in the following summer, completing the annual cycle synchronized with the host's environment.

Signs of infestation

The first signs of an infestation are behavioral changes in the herd during the summer months. Animals will shake their heads, sneeze, and exhibit signs of agitation.

As the larval infestation progresses within the nasal cavity, affected animals may show increased nasal discharge and labored breathing caused by airway blockage.

Infested individuals often look dull, lose body condition, and may isolate themselves from the rest of the herd to find quiet, shaded areas away from biting or buzzing insects.

The timing of treatment is critical; the most effective strategy is to treat herds in the autumn, after the flight season of the flies, to eliminate larvae before they cause overwinter damage.

Treatments are typically administered via injection or pour-on applications, providing a reliable way to manage infestations in both wild and captive settings.

It is essential to conduct treatments across the entire herd to ensure all infected individuals are cleared, thus minimizing the population of potential future flies.

In addition to medication, pasture management and monitoring of animal health are vital to prevent the establishment of high-density parasite populations.
