The genus Oestrus belongs to the family Oestridae, commonly known as bot flies. These are large, robust insects characterized by a bee-like or hairy fly appearance, primarily acting as obligate parasites of animals.

Adult flies do not possess functional mouthparts for feeding and rely entirely on energy reserves stored during their larval stage. Their sole purpose is reproduction and locating a suitable host.

The life cycle is holometabolous, progressing through egg, three larval instars, pupa, and adult stages. The larval stages are the most critical, as they occur within the host's body tissues.

The body of the adult fly is covered in fine hair, with a brownish or grayish mottled color. They are fast fliers, capable of precise targeting when depositing larvae into the host's nostrils.

Reproduction is viviparous; the female flies spray a mixture of fluid containing first-instar larvae into the nostrils of the sheep or goat while in flight.

What it damages

The Oestrus genus is a significant pest in the livestock industry, specifically targeting sheep and goats. It does not damage crops directly but severely impacts agricultural productivity.

The larvae settle in the nasal passages and frontal sinuses, feeding on mucus and irritating the lining of the sinuses with their hooked mouthparts, leading to inflammation and secondary infections.

The resulting condition, known as oestrosis, causes animal stress, weight loss, reduced wool quality, and decreased milk production, negatively affecting the farm's economic efficiency.

Severe infestations can cause respiratory distress, anemia, and, in rare instances involving larval migration into the brain, fatal neurological impairment.

Managing this pest is a routine yet essential part of veterinary medicine to ensure the welfare and profitability of small ruminant herds.

When it appears

The flight activity of Oestrus is highly dependent on ambient temperature and weather conditions, generally peaking during warm, sunny months.

In most temperate regions, adult flies are active from late spring through early autumn, when daylight and warmth favor their flying capabilities.

The developmental period of larvae within the host is variable and can span several months, depending on the season of infection and climatic conditions.

Wintering usually takes place in the host's nasal passages, where the first-instar larvae enter a period of arrested development, waiting for warmer conditions to mature.

Seasonal monitoring of bot fly activity allows livestock managers to time their prophylactic treatments effectively before the fly season begins.

Signs of infestation

Early clinical signs include intense nasal irritation, causing affected sheep to shake their heads, stomp their feet, and press their noses against the ground or fences.

Excessive nasal discharge, which can be clear, mucopurulent, or bloody, is a hallmark of an active infestation, often resulting in sneezing and labored breathing.

Animals may show signs of depression, decreased appetite, and poor physical condition as the parasitic burden increases.

In more advanced cases, restlessness and peculiar head-tossing behaviors are characteristic, signaling the presence of mature larvae in the sinuses.

Clinical diagnosis is based on the observation of these symptoms in a herd, especially during the warmer months when the fly's life cycle is most apparent.

Control measures

Effective control relies primarily on the administration of anthelmintic medications, such as macrocyclic lactones, which are highly effective against larval stages.

A structured veterinary program involving at least two treatments per year — after the fly season concludes in autumn and again in late winter — is recommended.

Good animal husbandry practices, including avoiding high animal density and maintaining clean, well-ventilated housing, help mitigate the risk of infestation.

Repellent sprays can be used during peak fly activity, although they are generally more supplementary than curative in managing large-scale sheep herds.
