How to identify

The Gasterophilus genus consists of bot flies belonging to the family Gasterophilidae, order Diptera. These flies are obligate parasites that spend their larval stages within the digestive tract of horses and other equids.

Adult bot flies resemble honey bees but do not possess functional mouthparts. Consequently, they do not feed during their short adult life, which is dedicated entirely to mating and egg-laying.

The lifecycle begins when the female deposits thousands of yellow-colored eggs onto the hair shafts of a horse, specifically targeting the legs, chest, and shoulders.

Upon ingestion or migration, the larvae attach to the stomach lining or the lining of the small intestine. They utilize specialized oral hooks to anchor themselves firmly to the tissues.

The development cycle within the host is lengthy, often lasting several months, before the mature larvae detach and are passed out with the host's manure into the environment to pupate.

What it damages

Horse bots cause a condition known as gastric myiasis. While adult flies are harmless regarding direct feeding, their presence causes severe distress, and the larval stage is highly damaging to the equine host.

Larval attachment to the stomach lining causes chronic inflammation, erosions, and ulceration. This interferes with the horse's ability to digest food properly and absorb essential nutrients.

Infested horses may show signs of poor body condition, a dull coat, and an inability to gain weight despite an adequate caloric intake. This significantly impacts performance in sports and working horses.

In severe cases, a large burden of larvae can lead to physical obstruction of the gastrointestinal tract, causing severe bouts of colic, which can be fatal without immediate veterinary care.

The constant irritation of the mouth and pharynx by early-stage larvae can lead to secondary bacterial infections, making it harder for the animal to graze or consume feed comfortably.

When it appears

Adult bot fly activity typically peaks during the warm summer months. This is when the weather provides the ideal thermal conditions for their flight and reproductive activities.

During the summer, horse owners often notice their horses becoming agitated or "spooked" by the buzzing sound of the flies as they attempt to land and lay eggs.

The larval phase occurs throughout the autumn and winter months, allowing the parasite to survive in the protected environment of the horse's internal system during colder weather.

The cycle completes when mature larvae emerge in the spring, coinciding with the transition of the season, which allows the pupae to develop in the soil successfully.

Awareness of these seasonal trends is crucial for implementing strategic deworming programs that target the larvae before they can cause significant tissue damage.

Signs of infestation

Behavioral changes are often the first sign of an infestation, with horses exhibiting excessive tail swishing, skin twitching, or sudden movements to evade the flies during the summer.

Visual inspection of the horse's coat during late summer will often reveal small, pale, grain-like eggs attached to the hair, particularly around the fetlocks and shoulders.

Oral lesions or inflammation of the gums can indicate that larvae have successfully entered the host's system and are migrating through the oral tissues.

Persistent weight loss and a lackluster appearance, despite high-quality feed, are classic clinical indicators of a heavy internal parasite load, including bots.

In some cases, the presence of these larvae may be confirmed by the owner or veterinarian if the insects are observed in the horse's manure.

Control measures

The primary control strategy involves the administration of effective anthelmintic medication, such as ivermectin or moxidectin, which are highly effective against larval stages of bots.

Manual removal of eggs from the horse's coat is a simple but important prophylactic measure. Using a grooming knife or warm water can help dislodge and remove eggs before the horse ingests them.

Fly control measures, including the use of horse rugs or fly repellents during the peak flight season, help reduce the number of eggs laid on the animal.

Pasture management and regular removal of manure from stables and paddocks can significantly decrease the likelihood of the larvae successfully pupating and emerging as adults next season.
