How to identify
The camel nasal bot fly (Cephalopina titillator) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Oestridae. Adult insects reach a length of 10–12 mm and have a grayish-brown body covered with fine hairs.
The life cycle of this parasite is viviparous. The female fly ejects larvae directly into the animal's nostrils while in flight, allowing them immediate access to the mucous membrane.
The larvae go through three developmental stages, gradually increasing in size and changing color from whitish to dark brown. In the final stage, they possess well-developed oral hooks.
Adult flies do not feed, as their mouthparts are rudimentary. The primary objective of the imago is to reproduce and distribute offspring within the camel population.
The larvae require the specific environment of the camel's nasopharynx to survive, where they find both nourishment and protection from external environmental factors.
What it damages
Camels (both dromedary and Bactrian) are the primary hosts for this parasite. Infestation leads to a condition known as cephalopinosis.
Larvae localize in the nasal cavity, frontal sinuses, and pharynx of the animal. During their development, they mechanically damage the mucous membranes.
Mass infestations of these parasites disrupt the animal's normal breathing. This leads to overall physical exhaustion and a significant decrease in camel productivity.
Metabolic waste products from the larvae trigger allergic reactions and inflammatory processes in the nasopharynx. In severe cases, secondary bacterial infection of the tissues may occur.
The parasite causes direct economic damage to livestock farming by weakening the camels' immune systems and causing weight loss, which is critical in arid climates.
When it appears
The activity of adult bot flies is closely tied to the warm season. The flight period of these insects begins with the arrival of consistently high temperatures.
In regions where camels are traditionally raised, peak activity occurs during the spring and summer. During this time, animals are most vulnerable to attacks.
Female bot flies are most aggressive in sunny, calm weather when camels are grazing. Attacks primarily occur during daylight hours.
The larval development cycle inside the host takes significant time and often spans across seasons. Larvae are capable of overwintering in the animal's nasopharynx.
The final exit of the larvae from the host for pupation in the soil usually takes place in the spring, completing the parasite's seasonal cycle.
Signs of infestation
The first sign of infestation is restless behavior in the camels. Animals frequently shake their heads, sneeze, and snort in an attempt to dislodge the parasites.
Difficulty in breathing and purulent nasal discharge are often observed. In neglected cases, the discharge may become blood-tinged.
Visual inspection of the nasal passages may reveal larvae at various stages of development. Animals often rub their noses against objects to relieve itching.

It is crucial to carry out preventive treatments for the entire herd in the autumn to eliminate larvae before winter and minimize overall damage.
It is necessary to manage grazing schedules to avoid peak bot fly activity periods. Whenever possible, nighttime grazing is recommended.
Adherence to sanitary and hygienic standards in housing areas helps reduce the risk of mass parasite transmission within the herd.
Strict veterinary monitoring and regular deworming are the keys to maintaining high productivity in camel farming and ensuring animal health.
