How to identify
The common mosquito (Culex pipiens) is a member of the Culicidae family, known for its complete metamorphosis cycle consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages.
Adults are characterized by a slender body, roughly 4–7 mm long, featuring wings with scales and a prominent proboscis. Males are easily distinguished by their feathery antennae, which are much denser than those of females.
The larval stage occurs exclusively in water. These larvae, often called 'wrigglers', are easily identifiable by their breathing siphon at the posterior end, which they use to breathe air at the water surface.
Pupae are active and aquatic but do not feed. They are extremely agile and react quickly to vibrations in the water, diving downwards to escape potential predators.
Adults prefer sheltered, humid areas during the day, such as dense garden foliage, tall grasses, and the shaded corners of greenhouses, where they remain inactive until dusk.
What it damages
While mosquitoes do not feed directly on agricultural crops, their presence as a pest is highly significant in farming environments. They act as vectors for various diseases affecting livestock and humans.
Heavy mosquito pressure disrupts outdoor agricultural work, leading to decreased worker efficiency and potential neglect of critical crop maintenance tasks due to discomfort.
The overuse of broad-spectrum insecticides to combat mosquitoes in residential or farming areas can negatively impact populations of beneficial pollinators and predatory insects crucial for crop health.
In greenhouse settings, mosquitoes can interfere with routine maintenance and care, often thriving in the high humidity and stagnant water areas common in such structures.
Indirectly, mosquitoes contribute to the overall stress of farm animals, which can result in reduced weight gain, lower milk production, and general susceptibility to secondary infections.
When it appears
The life cycle initiates in early spring once water temperatures rise above 10–12°C. This threshold triggers the first generation of adults to emerge from hibernation sites.
Peak population densities are typically recorded during mid-summer (June and July), where warm temperatures significantly accelerate the development time from egg to adult.
Throughout the season, multiple generations may occur, often 5 to 7 in temperate climates, depending on rainfall patterns and the availability of stagnant water.
As temperatures drop in autumn, fertilized females prepare for overwintering, seeking refuge in cellars, sheds, and dense vegetation to survive until the following spring.
High rainfall periods followed by dry spells often create temporary pools in fields and farmyards, providing ideal, predator-free habitats for mosquito breeding.
Signs of infestation
The presence of mosquito larvae clusters in stagnant water containers like barrels, irrigation tanks, or clogged drainage pipes is the most reliable sign of an infestation.
Audible 'buzzing' during sunset hours around dense shrubbery or near water sources indicates high local activity and reproduction density.
Adults seen resting on the underside of leaves or on walls in humid areas confirm that the local environment is supporting a reproducing population.
Egg rafts, which look like small brown-black flecks floating on the water surface, are a clear indicator of active egg-laying by females in the immediate vicinity.
Increased disturbance of livestock or outdoor workers during the evening hours serves as a behavioral indicator of heavy mosquito pressure in the surrounding area.
Control measures
The most effective strategy is the systematic elimination of breeding sites by removing, draining, or covering any stagnant water vessels on the property.
- Introduce fish species (like mosquitofish) into decorative ponds or water reservoirs to prey on larvae.
- Apply biological larvicides based on Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis, which are safe for plants and beneficial insects.
- Install fine mesh screening on greenhouse vents and doorways to prevent adults from entering protected areas.
- Regularly clear drainage ditches and gutters to ensure consistent water flow and prevent pooling.
- Use physical surface barriers or environmental-friendly oils on standing water to disrupt the respiratory cycle of larvae.
