How to identify
Vryburgia transvaalensis belongs to the family Pseudococcidae (mealybugs) of the order Hemiptera. This small insect is covered with a waxy coating in its adult stage, giving it a characteristic mealy appearance.
Adult females of this species have an oval body, often hidden within white cottony wax secretions. Identifying the species requires microscopic analysis of morphological traits, such as the arrangement and count of glandular pores and setae on the body.
Males are poorly developed, winged, and differ significantly from females in appearance; however, they have a very short lifespan and do not feed. It is the female that causes the primary damage while living a cryptic lifestyle.
The life cycle passes through several larval stages, which are most active and mobile in the early stages. It is during the crawler phase that the pest actively disperses over the plant or is transferred to neighboring specimens.
This pest often specializes in infesting specific groups of plants, preferring areas where they can easily hide from external environmental factors and predators.
What it damages
