The six-spotted leafhopper (Cicadula sexnotata, often referred to as Tettigella sexlineata) is a member of the Cicadellidae family, order Hemiptera. Adults are typically 3.5 to 4 mm long with a distinct yellowish-green coloration.
A key diagnostic feature is the presence of dark spots on the head and thorax. The arrangement and number of these spots are used by entomologists to identify the species in field conditions.
They possess transparent to slightly yellowish wings that are held tent-like over the body. Nymphs resemble adults but are smaller, wingless, and highly mobile, moving swiftly across the foliage when disturbed.
Equipped with strong hind legs, these insects are excellent jumpers, making manual capture difficult. Their sensitive antennae allow them to detect vibrations and escape threats rapidly.
Their biological life cycle progresses through eggs, five nymphal stages, and the adult stage. They commonly overwinter as eggs deposited within plant tissues or the upper soil crust of perennial grasses.
What it damages
This pest is a polyphage, causing significant damage to cereal crops such as wheat, barley, and oats, as well as various forage grasses and vegetable crops. It is particularly destructive during the early stages of plant development.
Feeding is performed by piercing plant tissues with specialized mouthparts and extracting cellular sap. This process impairs photosynthesis and disrupts the overall nutrient transport within the plant.
The most severe impact is their role as vectors for phytopathogenic viruses, including the oat dwarf virus. The transmission of these diseases can be far more devastating to crop yields than the physical feeding damage itself.
Signs of feeding include light-colored stippling or spotting on leaves, which may eventually coalesce into yellowed or necrotic areas. Plants exhibit stunted growth and reduced vigor, especially under stress.
Economic losses are cumulative, arising from both reduced grain quality and total loss of biomass in fodder crops, which can jeopardize the productivity of livestock operations.
When it appears
Nymphs typically emerge from overwintering eggs in late spring once average air temperatures exceed +10°C to +12°C. Population levels generally peak between late May and August.
Several generations can occur throughout the growing season, depending on climate conditions. Hot and dry summers are particularly favorable for rapid population growth and high reproductive success.
In autumn, adults migrate to winter cereal fields. This migration is a critical period for crop protection, as the younger seedlings are highly vulnerable to both direct feeding and virus transmission from the immigrant population.
Environmental factors heavily influence their prevalence; while warm, stable weather accelerates development, excessive moisture and rainfall during early nymphal stages can significantly suppress their numbers.
Monitoring for the six-spotted leafhopper involves using sweep nets or yellow sticky traps placed within fields, particularly during the tillering and jointing growth stages of cereals.
Signs of infestation
Early signs of an infestation include the appearance of tiny white dots on leaf surfaces—the result of stylet punctures. Over time, these areas expand, leading to chlorosis.
Virus symptoms introduced by the leafhopper often include distorted leaf growth, mosaic patterns, and an unnatural increase in tillering (often called "witches' broom"). Stunted, yellowed plants are telltale indicators.
The presence of honeydew on foliage is another indicator. This sugary secretion encourages the growth of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight and further reduces the photosynthetic efficiency of the crop.
Infestations typically start at the field edges, where the leafhoppers migrate from unmanaged pastures or field margins, gradually spreading toward the center as the season progresses.
A combination of yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and the presence of jumping insects in the field requires immediate assessment to prevent an epidemic spread of viral pathogens.
Control measures
Management strategies focus on cultural practices, such as controlling weed reservoirs, optimizing planting dates to avoid peak insect migration, and choosing resistant crop varieties.
Seed treatments with systemic insecticides are a highly effective preventive measure, protecting vulnerable young seedlings from early-season feeding and potential virus inoculation.
Chemical control involving systemic or contact insecticides is recommended when population thresholds are exceeded. Timely application during the nymphal stage is crucial to minimize viral transmission.
