The Pueraria spider mite (Tetranychus pueraricola) belongs to the family Tetranychidae, order Trombidiformes. It is a highly specialized mite that thrives in environments where host plants are readily available, particularly in subtropical and temperate climates.
These mites are microscopic, with adults typically measuring less than 0.5 mm in length. Their bodies are oval and vary in color from yellowish-green to brownish, depending on their feeding stage and the plant species consumed.
The life cycle involves an egg stage, a larval stage, two nymphal stages (protonymph and deutonymph), and the adult stage. The development rate is highly temperature-dependent, allowing for multiple generations per year.
During unfavorable seasons, mated females enter a state of diapause, hiding in soil cracks, under leaf litter, or in protected bark crevices, ensuring the survival of the population through harsh conditions.
