Taxonomic position: The white-footed ant (Technomyrmex albipes) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Formicidae. Originating from Southeast Asia, this invasive species has spread globally, thriving in both tropical and subtropical climates and becoming a major concern for agricultural sectors.

Host plants and damage: While these ants do not consume plant tissue directly, they act as primary protectors for sap-sucking insects like aphids, scales, mealybugs, and whiteflies. By defending these pests from natural predators and moving them to healthy plant parts, they cause widespread plant weakening, stunted growth, and the development of sooty mold caused by honeydew secretions.

Biology and lifecycle: This species is characterized by polygyny, with colonies containing numerous queens and tens of thousands of workers. They form massive supercolonies that can span several hectares. They are highly adaptable, nesting in rotting wood, soil, dense foliage, or man-made structures, making them extremely difficult to eradicate once established.

Economic impact: The presence of Technomyrmex albipes significantly lowers crop yield and quality, especially in fruit orchards and citrus groves. By interfering with biological control programs, they force growers to rely heavily on chemical insecticides, increasing production costs and negatively impacting the environment.
