Ostriches primarily damage crops such as cereals, legumes, and various green forages. By grazing on young shoots of wheat, corn, and alfalfa, they remove essential biomass during the early growth stages of the plants. Their high food intake can result in rapid depletion of crops in localized areas surrounding their habitat.
The biology of the ostrich is defined by its social structure and constant movement in search of food. Their foraging behavior is continuous throughout the day, allowing them to cover vast distances. This mobility means that a single flock can affect large portions of a field in a relatively short amount of time, causing widespread damage to vegetation.
The harm caused by Struthionidae is two-fold: direct consumption and severe physical damage. Due to their significant body weight, ostriches cause deep soil compaction when walking through fields, which damages root systems. Furthermore, trampling destroys young plants mechanically, often rendering the soil compacted to the point where re-sowing is required.
Protection measures should focus on physical barriers and deterrents. Constructing robust perimeter fencing is the most reliable way to prevent entry into sensitive crop areas. Additionally, installing motion-activated acoustic repellents or utilizing livestock guarding dogs can effectively discourage these birds from entering farming zones and minimize economic losses.
