Protentomids
Systematic position. Protentomids (Protentomidae) are members of the order Protura, which are minute, wingless hexapods. These organisms represent some of the most primitive arthropods, characterized by the total absence of antennae, eyes, and wings, having adapted exclusively to the interstitial spaces within soil profiles.

Biology and life cycle. Protentomidae inhabit moist soil environments, leaf litter, and subterranean habitats. Their development is characterized by anamorphosis, where the number of abdominal segments increases with each successive molt. Their reproductive rate is generally low, and they are highly dependent on soil humidity, making them susceptible to environmental fluctuations.
Crops and damage profile. In agronomic systems, while primarily fungivorous and detritivorous, Protentomidae can occasionally exhibit phytophagous behavior. They pose a threat to emerging crops by feeding on germinating seeds and the delicate root tissues of seedling plants during early growth stages, potentially hindering nutrient uptake.
Economic importance. The damage caused by protentomids is often subtle but cumulative. By wounding root surfaces, they create entry points for soil-borne pathogens, including bacteria and fungi, which can result in "damping-off" symptoms or overall plant stunted growth. Economic loss is most significant when environmental conditions delay crop germination.
Protection measures. Effective control involves cultural and chemical strategies:
- Optimizing soil structure through tillage to reduce localized overpopulation.
- Using seed treatments (fungicides and insecticides) to shield seedlings during the vulnerable germination phase.

- Regular monitoring of soil health to maintain a balance of natural beneficial predators that regulate pest populations.
