Their life cycle involves nesting in colonies, often on trees near water bodies, which leads to the degradation of coastal vegetation due to the high concentration of guano containing aggressive acids. Cormorants are highly efficient predators: an adult bird can consume up to 500–800 grams of fish daily, causing massive losses to populations of valuable commercial species such as carp, trout, or sturgeon.
