They are omnivorous and often display aggressive foraging behavior, which leads to the direct consumption of plant tissues, such as leaves and tender root hairs, especially in systems where plants are partially submerged in the fish habitat.
Their biological cycle involves nest-building, where males use vegetation to support bubble nests. This activity, combined with their territorial nature, leads to mechanical damage to the submerged parts of plants. Constant movement and foraging in the root zone can disrupt plant stability and prevent proper nutrient uptake.
The damage caused by these fish is primarily mechanical and chemical. Mechanical damage occurs through nibbling on roots and leaves, while chemical impact results from excessive waste production that alters the nutrient solution balance. Such disruptions often lead to stunted growth or the physiological decline of the crops.
Management and protection strategies require careful system design. It is recommended to use specialized netting to separate the root zone from the fish, ensure adequate nutrition for the fish to prevent herbivorous behavior, and implement robust water filtration to mitigate the buildup of fish waste that negatively affects plant hydroponic health.
