This pest prefers growing media with high organic matter content and high moisture levels. Oncopoduridae cause the most significant damage to young seedlings of vegetables, ornamental plants, and flowers, particularly in greenhouse conditions where constant moisture provides an ideal environment for their rapid proliferation.

The biology of these organisms is closely linked to the presence of decaying plant material. Their life cycle involves multiple molting stages, which continue even in adult specimens. They reproduce very quickly, allowing populations to reach critical densities within a short period, capable of severely damaging the root systems of young plants.

The primary damage involves the destruction of fine root hairs and lateral roots. This feeding leads to stunted plant growth, delayed development of seedlings, and reduced resistance to fungal pathogens. These feeding wounds often serve as entry points for secondary infections, leading to root rot and other soil-borne diseases.
