Damage usually occurs during two main periods: immediately after sowing, when birds feed on germinating seeds, and during the ripening stage, when they consume or destroy the grain or fruit directly from the standing crop.

The biology of corvids is defined by their high cognitive abilities and social structure. They operate in flocks, utilizing communal memory to locate food sources. Their reproductive cycle includes nesting in early spring, and as the season progresses, young birds join the flocks, further increasing the population density and foraging pressure on farmland.

The nature of the damage is largely destructive. Corvids often pull up young seedlings to access the seed, leading to uneven crop density. By damaging maize cobs or sunflower heads, they break the protective husks, which subsequently allows secondary infections, molds, and insect pests to enter the plant tissue.
