The primary crop damaged by these crustaceans is rice during the germination and seedling phases. Fairy shrimp feed on organic matter but will graze on newly germinated rice roots and shoots if food is scarce. Their constant swimming activity disturbs the sediment, which can dislodge seeds and prevent them from anchoring properly in the soil.

The biology of Branchipodidae is defined by their highly resilient cysts. These eggs can survive for many years in dry soil, waiting for the optimal environmental conditions created by field flooding. Once the water temperature is suitable, the cysts hatch, and the larvae develop rapidly, reaching sexual maturity within a very short period to produce subsequent generations.

The increase in water turbidity caused by the crustaceans inhibits photosynthesis, further weakening the young rice plants.
