How to identify

Euxoa bilitura is a moth belonging to the family Noctuidae (cutworms). These insects are known for their nocturnal habits and the cryptic coloration that allows them to blend perfectly with their environment.

The adult moth features a wingspan of approximately 35–40 mm. Its forewings are typically brownish-grey with obscure patterns, providing excellent camouflage while resting on soil or debris during the day.

The larvae, known as cutworms, are stout and earthy-coloured, ranging from dull grey to brown. Their body is smooth, designed for burrowing and moving easily through the upper soil layers.

The head of the larva is sclerotized and dark, equipped with powerful mandibles capable of severing the stems of young plants just below the soil surface.

Pupation occurs in an underground chamber created by the larva. The pupa is typically reddish-brown and stays protected in the soil until the next adult emergence.

What it damages

The primary damage is caused by the larvae, which are generalist feeders. Euxoa bilitura targets a wide range of agricultural crops across multiple fields and gardens.

Cereal crops like winter wheat and barley are particularly vulnerable during their germination phase in autumn, leading to reduced stand density.

Row crops such as maize, sunflower, and sugar beet also suffer significant damage, as young seedlings are easily killed by the cutworms' feeding activity.

The damage is characterized by the total severance of the plant stem at the soil line, resulting in rapid wilting and the subsequent death of the seedling.

When it appears

The adult flight occurs in mid-summer, when the moths mate and lay eggs directly into the soil or onto host plant remnants, favouring areas with adequate moisture.

Larval activity reaches its peak in the autumn. At this time, the young larvae feed voraciously on emerging seedlings to gain energy before entering winter diapause.

Hibernation takes place in the soil, where the larvae survive the cold winter months at depths ranging from 15 to 20 centimetres depending on soil type and moisture.

When temperatures rise in the spring, the larvae resume feeding on the remaining vegetation before eventually entering the pupal stage, completing their life cycle.

The duration and intensity of the life cycle are heavily influenced by the seasonal climate, as drought or excessive cold can drastically affect survival rates.

Signs of infestation

The first sign of an Euxoa bilitura infestation is the presence of sudden wilting of otherwise healthy-looking plants in a field or garden row.

Inspection of the root zone will reveal that the stem has been completely chewed through or severed, separating the root system from the foliage.

Digging around the base of a damaged plant will often reveal the larvae, which typically curl into a C-shape when disturbed during their daytime rest.

The emergence of bare patches in the field that gradually increase in size is a major indicator that cutworm populations are actively feeding on the crop.

The presence of large numbers of insectivorous birds patrolling the fields during or after tillage is a secondary indicator of high larval activity in the soil.

Control measures

Good agricultural practices such as deep autumn ploughing help to bring larvae to the surface, exposing them to predators and harsh environmental conditions.

Maintaining clean fields by eliminating weeds is crucial, as weeds provide secondary food sources that sustain cutworm populations between crop rotations.

For high-risk areas, the use of insecticide-treated seeds can provide essential early-season protection against larval attacks on emerging crops.

Chemical control via surface-applied insecticides is most effective when performed in the evening, as this is when the larvae surface to feed.
