How to identify

The Green tortrix (Choristoneura viridis) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. The adult moth is small and has a distinct green coloration on its wings, which provides excellent camouflage against tree leaves.

The life cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and imago. The caterpillars are highly active, reaching 15–20 mm in length with a well-developed head capsule.

Identifying this species is often difficult due to the secretive lifestyle of the larvae, which spend most of their time inside rolled leaves held together by silk strands.

Agricultural professionals use pheromone traps for monitoring. These tools are essential for determining the timing of moth flight and optimizing the schedule for pesticide applications.

What it damages

Mechanical control includes the removal and destruction of rolled leaves where larvae reside. This is particularly effective in small orchards or home gardens where infestation levels are low.

Biological control using Bacillus thuringiensis-based products is a highly effective and environmentally friendly way to suppress caterpillar populations without harming beneficial insects.

Chemical control requires the precise timing of insecticide applications, targeting the young larvae before they have the opportunity to spin their protective leaf rolls.
