Baltic sturgeon

Description

How to identify

The Baltic sturgeon (Acipenser sturio) is a member of the order Acipenseriformes and the family Acipenseridae. This species is historically significant as one of the largest anadromous fish in European waters.

It is characterized by an elongated body armored with five rows of bony scutes. The snout is characteristically elongated and pointed, which assists the fish in feeding along the river or sea beds.

The species is biologically distinct due to its late sexual maturity and slow growth cycle, making the recovery of its wild populations extremely difficult. It is not an agricultural pest and has zero impact on plant health.

Taxonomically, it is classified as a critically endangered species. Its primary habitat includes the coastal waters of the Baltic and North Seas, as well as the connecting major river systems for spawning purposes.

In modern ichthyology, the Baltic sturgeon serves as a sentinel species for the health of aquatic ecosystems. It is strictly protected by international legislation and conservation programs to prevent total extinction.
