How to identify
The blueberry bud mite (Aceria vaccinii) is a microscopic pest classified under the order Acariformes and the family Eriophyidae. Adult mites are worm-like, elongated, and white, measuring only about 0.2 mm in length.
Due to their microscopic size, these mites are impossible to see with the naked eye. Identification typically requires professional magnification tools to spot their presence within the buds of host plants.
The life cycle encompasses several stages: egg, two nymphal stages, and adult. The population grows rapidly during the season, with multiple generations emerging depending on favorable climate conditions.
The mites overwinter as fertilized females under the bud scales of the current year's shoots. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to feed and begin the reproductive cycle within the developing buds.
Dissemination within a plantation occurs passively. Wind, splashing rain, and agricultural activities, such as using infested planting stock or contaminated pruning tools, are primary ways the mite spreads.
What it damages
The primary hosts of this pest include various species of the Vaccinium genus, notably blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum, Vaccinium myrtillus) and cranberries.
Damage is caused by both adults and nymphs feeding on the cellular sap of the bud tissues. This feeding disrupts the plant's physiological processes, leading to stunted or necrotic bud growth.
When infestation is severe, buds may fail to open entirely or produce malformed, weak shoots. This significantly impacts the plant's ability to produce flowers and eventually berries.
Continuous feeding causes the formation of abnormal growth patterns, often referred to as «witch's brooms,» which significantly drain the plant's energy reserves.
Furthermore, these mites can act as vectors for various plant viruses, causing long-term damage that weakens the plant's immunity and overall structural integrity.
Signs of infestation
Early symptoms include late or uneven bud break in the spring, with many buds remaining brown, dry, or fail to develop into foliage at all.
Leaves that do emerge from infested buds often appear curled, twisted, or exhibit chlorotic spots, showing signs of severe physiological stress.
Close inspection of the shoots often reveals swollen or deformed bud scales, which serve as the primary hideouts and feeding sites for the mite colonies.
Reduced vigor of the entire bush is a common sign of long-term infestation. You may observe shorter internodes and a sparser overall canopy as the plant struggles to grow.
Fruit yield is significantly reduced; the berries that do form are often underdeveloped, small, or have an irregular shape, reflecting the poor health of the supporting tissues.
Control measures
The most effective strategy is the use of healthy, mite-free nursery stock. Always source plants from reputable suppliers to ensure the initial planting is clean.
Sanitary pruning is a critical practice. Removing and immediately destroying infested shoots in early spring helps to significantly lower the mite population density.
Chemical control using specific acaricides is most effective when applied at the right timing, particularly when overwintering females emerge from their hiding spots.
Preventative applications of sulfur-based products are known to suppress mite development and provide a layer of protection against future infestations during the growing season.
