Black Salsify SEASONAL DELICACY

Why «Zamorskiy Delikates» is a staple for root crop growers

Growing scorzonera (black salsify) has always been a niche challenge, but the «Zamorskiy Delikates» variety by Gavrish stands out for its reliability. This hybrid/variety provides a consistent performance that is often missing in more temperamental root crops.

Operational performance and field observations

For those managing the crop, here is what you need to know about the field performance:

• Marketability: The dark, black skin is aesthetically pleasing and durable. A root diameter of 3-4 cm is ideal for the fresh market, offering a uniform appearance that buyers prefer.
• Resilience: The roots are sturdy and hold up well during harvesting, showing minimal breakage even in less-than-perfect soil conditions.
• Versatility: Whether you are targeting fresh produce markets or processing facilities, the texture and shelf-life of this variety make it a low-risk option.

Tips for optimal cultivation

The secret to achieving the maximum diameter lies in soil preparation. Avoid heavy clays where the roots might branch or deform. Deep, loose sandy loams allow the root to develop a straight, clean shape. Maintaining consistent moisture is key during the rapid growth phase; otherwise, the skin can become brittle. Post-harvest, the roots store exceptionally well in cool conditions, maintaining their quality long enough for you to navigate market fluctuations. For any professional agronomist or farmer looking to diversify, this Gavrish variety is a practical and high-performing choice.
