Description Vlada
Okra is a heat-loving plant of the mallow family that adapts easily to the conditions of the mid-latitude region. Seeds can be sown in April, and seedlings transplanted in May; if necessary, the plant can be covered to protect it from frost. Okra fruits resemble green pepper pods about a finger long and ripen quickly – they are best collected from August to November before full maturity, otherwise they become fibrous and lose their beneficial properties.

Inside the pods are seeds of various shapes: oval, spherical, smooth, and knob-like. Fruits are rich in iron, potassium, calcium and vitamins, have antioxidant properties and contain a mucilaginous secret that thickens liquids – this makes okra a valuable ingredient for soups and sauces, especially for ulcer and gastritis. Seeds contain up to 20% oil, similar to olive oil, and can be used as a coffee surrogate.

Okra is widely used in cooking: it can be added to dishes at the very end to preserve flavor and beneficial properties; popular options are okra in Greek-style sauce, baked with eggs or minced meat. In medicine, the plant is used to treat cough (roots are ground into powder), as well as for gastrointestinal tract diseases, diabetes and atherosclerosis – a decoction from fruits acts as an antiseptic and warming agent. Okra extract is added to cosmetic creams for strengthening skin and hair.

Thus, okra combines nutritional properties, therapeutic effects and culinary versatility, which makes it a valuable product both in the garden and in the modern person's diet.
