Biologically, they are characterized by a well-developed mycelium, which can be either non-septate or divided into fragments during their life cycle.

Reproduction is carried out through the formation of spores, which are often adapted for active host searching in moist soil or aquatic environments.

Systematically, this order belongs to the Zoopagomycota phylum, comprising forms with a distinct trophic specialization on animal substrates.

Conditions for development

The development of Zoopagales is directly dependent on the presence of a population of their natural hosts — small invertebrates living in the soil layer or on plant debris.

Optimal conditions for their spread include high soil moisture, sufficient aeration, and the presence of organic matter providing a food base for microfauna.

A moderate temperature range (from +15 to +25 degrees Celsius) facilitates the most active metabolism and spore production of these organisms.

In the natural environment, their activity increases with the application of organic fertilizers, which stimulate the growth of soil nematode and rotifer populations.

Spore dispersal occurs passively through soil water and by the movement of infected microorganisms across the soil matrix.

Why it matters

For most cultivated crops, Zoopagales do not pose a direct pathogenic threat, as their metabolism is not oriented towards the degradation of plant cells.

Conversely, their role in the agro-ecosystem is often considered beneficial or neutral, as they participate in regulating the population of soil invertebrates.

However, under specific greenhouse conditions, the mass development of certain species may affect the microbial balance of the rhizosphere, indirectly impacting plant nutrient uptake.

Direct damage in the form of necrosis, spotting, or wilting on leaves and fruits due to interaction with these fungi has not been reported by agronomists.

Therefore, Zoopagales are not classified as plant disease agents requiring fungicide application for crop protection.

In agronomic practice, maintaining a healthy soil microbiocenosis is a priority, which naturally limits the dominance of any single fungal species.

The application of standard agronomic practices, such as crop rotation and organic matter incorporation, helps support biological diversity in the soil.

The use of broad-spectrum fungicides may suppress beneficial soil microflora; therefore, they should be applied only when there is a real threat from phytopathogenic organisms.
