Verrucaria is a genus of fungi that often exist as lichens, colonizing the bark of trees, stones, and rocky surfaces. In an agronomic context, their presence is characterized by the formation of small, wart-like growths on the bark of fruit and ornamental trees.
These growths typically appear as dark, brownish, or black spots that are firmly attached to the substrate. As they grow and merge, they form a crust-like layer that can cover significant portions of the trunk and primary branches.
Unlike parasitic fungi that invade internal tissues, Verrucaria typically remains on the surface. However, its presence significantly alters the texture of the bark, making it rough, uneven, and aesthetically unpleasing.
Under close observation, the surfaces of these growths reveal tiny pores or depressions. The name of the genus itself is derived from the Latin word "verruca," meaning wart, which describes their typical physical appearance on tree bark.
Distinguishing Verrucaria from more harmful pathogenic fungi is crucial for orchardists. While it is often an epiphyte, heavy colonization can indicate poor orchard health or maintenance issues that require attention.
Pathogen
The pathogens responsible for this condition are ascomycete fungi within the genus Verrucaria, which form symbiotic relationships with algae to function as lichens. This adaptation allows them to survive in harsh and nutrient-poor environments.
Biologically, these are obligate symbionts that rely on a stable substrate for physical support. The fungal hyphae penetrate only the outermost layers of the bark and do not invade the vascular system or cambium of the tree.
Reproduction is primarily achieved through spores, which are disseminated by wind, rain splashes, or insects. Upon landing on suitable bark, the spores germinate to form a new thallus, gradually establishing a foothold.
These organisms are highly resistant to environmental stressors, including intense ultraviolet radiation and significant fluctuations in temperature. They can remain dormant during dry periods and activate rapidly when moisture is available.
Because they are lichenized fungi, their life cycle is generally slow and steady. They do not cause the rapid decay typically associated with plant pathogens, making their management a matter of long-term care rather than emergency treatment.
Conditions for development
High humidity and poor air circulation are the primary drivers of Verrucaria development. Orchards with dense canopies or those located in low-lying, damp areas are particularly prone to colonization.
Neglected orchards, characterized by lack of pruning and the accumulation of dead or loose bark, provide an ideal habitat for spore germination. The lack of bark renewal on older trees makes them especially susceptible.
While temperature ranges for growth are quite broad, persistent moisture during spring and autumn is the most critical factor. Frequent rain or heavy dew on the bark creates the ideal microclimate for the establishment of these fungi.
Insufficient light reaching the trunk and lower branches prevents the bark from drying out quickly, further encouraging the growth of Verrucaria colonies. This is why properly managed, thinned-out trees show significantly lower levels of infection.
Management practices, such as excessive mulching right against the trunk, can also contribute to localized humidity levels that favour the expansion of these lichenized growths.
Why it matters
The direct damage caused by Verrucaria is often considered mild, as it does not consume tree nutrients directly. However, it can create a micro-environment that fosters secondary issues, such as pests like scale insects or mites.
The crust-like layer can trap moisture against the bark for extended periods, potentially leading to localized bark rot or providing an entry point for other opportunistic pathogenic bacteria and fungi.
Physiologically, heavy colonization can hinder the natural gas exchange of the bark, potentially putting stress on the tree. While not immediately fatal, it suggests that the tree's overall vigor could be improved.
For commercial growers, the aesthetic impact is significant. A tree covered in lichenized growths is often perceived as a sign of poor orchard hygiene, which can affect the marketability or perceived quality of the produce.
In younger trees, extensive colonization can mechanically restrict the flexibility of the bark, which may slightly interfere with the tree’s growth and ability to expand its trunk girth during the growing season.
Protection
The most effective preventative measure is the regular physical removal of loose, old bark from trunks and primary branches. This eliminates the habitat required for Verrucaria to establish itself.
Whitewashing trunks with a lime-based solution supplemented with copper sulfate is a traditional and highly effective method to prevent the development of lichens and protect the bark surface.
Thinning out the canopy through regular pruning improves ventilation and light penetration. By ensuring the bark dries out quickly after rainfall, the conditions become hostile to the growth of lichenized fungi.
For severe infestations, applying fungicides such as iron sulfate during the dormant period is recommended. This can effectively strip the lichen colonies from the bark while also providing minor trace element benefits to the tree.
Maintaining overall tree vitality through balanced fertilization and proper irrigation ensures a healthy, rapidly renewing bark surface, which is naturally more resistant to colonization by Verrucaria and other epiphytes.
