Affected pods often appear swollen, misshapen, and may exhibit premature splitting of the pod walls. Farmers may notice that the pods do not reach their expected size or fail to fill properly, looking stunted compared to surrounding healthy plants.

On early stages of development, the infection might be nearly invisible to the untrained eye. However, close observation of the flowering structures can sometimes reveal minor color changes or slight structural abnormalities before the pods are fully formed.

In mature crops, the presence of the disease is confirmed when the pods are broken, revealing the characteristic dark, sooty powder. This dusty material easily releases into the air upon handling, further spreading the pathogen within the field.
