Description

Symptoms

The primary symptom is the complete replacement of inflorescences with a dark, dusty mass of fungal spores. This is often referred to as a "smutted" head or panicle.

The spore masses are initially contained within a thin, membrane-like sheath. As the plant matures, this membrane ruptures, releasing a cloud of black spores into the air.

Infected plants often display stunted growth, abnormal stem elongation, and a general loss of vigor. The morphological changes in the reproductive parts make the disease very easy to identify during the heading stage.

In some cases, the infected stems may appear slightly swollen before the fungal mass erupts. There is a total absence of viable seeds in heavily affected areas of the plant.

Unlike healthy plants, diseased specimens are easily distinguishable by their darker, powdery panicles that stand out against the lighter, golden color of normal grain heads.
