Symptoms
The initial signs of the disease are small, chlorotic or light green spots on the leaves. As the infection progresses, these spots expand and change color to brown or dark greyish-brown.
A distinctive feature of this leaf spot is that lesions are often bounded by leaf veins, resulting in an angular appearance. In severe cases, these spots merge, covering large portions of the leaf surface.
A white or greyish powdery growth can often be observed on the underside of the leaves in the infected areas. This represents the fungal sporulation layer and is a definitive symptom for diagnosis.
As the infection worsens, leaves turn yellow, wilt, and eventually die. This premature senescence significantly reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plant, leading to overall weakness and stunted growth.
In some instances, the fungus can also infect petioles and stems, appearing as elongated necrotic lesions. This compromises the plant's structural integrity and its ability to transport nutrients efficiently.
