Symptoms

The most distinctive symptom is the scaling and flaking of bark on the trunk and main branches. The bark peels off in irregular patches, exposing the dead tissue underneath.

In the early stages, particularly on young leaves, symptoms may manifest as flecking or clearing of the leaf veins. This often appears as a net-like or mosaic pattern.

As the disease progresses, the wood beneath the scaling bark turns dark and necrotic. This causes a breakdown in nutrient transport, eventually leading to branch dieback.

The disease often shows a sectoral distribution. It is common to find one side of the tree severely affected by bark scaling while the other side appears relatively healthy.

Gumming, or the oozing of sap from cracks in the bark, is frequently observed during periods of active growth. This further weakens the tree and invites secondary pathogens.

Pathogen

Citrus psorosis is caused by the Citrus psorosis virus (CPsV), a member of the Ophioviridae family. This is a severe systemic viral disease that affects various citrus species, including oranges, grapefruits, and mandarins.

The virus acts as a systemic infection, spreading through the phloem of the plant. Once a tree is infected, the virus becomes part of its permanent physiological system.

The primary transmission route is through grafting using infected budwood. Since the virus can remain latent for years, propagators often unknowingly use infected material.

Mechanical transmission via contaminated pruning tools is another risk factor. If tools are not sanitized between trees, the virus can spread from an infected source to a healthy plant.

The virus disrupts the normal cell division process in the cambium, leading to the characteristic development of necrotic tissue and bark lesions.

Conditions for development

The development of psorosis is less dependent on environmental conditions and more on the host's physiological state. Stress factors can exacerbate the visible symptoms.

The latency period is exceptionally long, frequently ranging from 5 to 15 years. Trees can reach maturity and produce fruit while harboring the virus, making early detection difficult.

Climatic factors do not impact the virus itself, but they affect the overall vigor of the host plant. Weakened or stressed trees often show more aggressive bark symptoms.

Spread is mainly driven by human activity, specifically poor nursery practices and inadequate sanitation protocols during orchard maintenance.

There is no known vector for this virus in the field, which confirms that propagation and mechanical transmission are the primary vectors of interest for management.

Why it matters

Citrus psorosis is highly damaging because it significantly reduces the productive lifespan of the orchard. Infected trees lose their vigor and yield capacity over time.

Fruit quality is negatively impacted, leading to smaller, misshapen fruits with poor market value. This results in direct economic losses for the grower.

The progressive death of branches and the overall canopy leads to tree decline. Eventually, the tree becomes unproductive and must be removed.

Secondary infections occur through bark cracks, as pathogens like fungi and bacteria colonize the damaged areas, accelerating the tree's collapse.

Due to the lack of a cure, an infected orchard requires significant replanting, making this disease one of the most critical threats to citrus profitability.

Protection

The cornerstone of management is the use of virus-free certified budwood. All nurseries must adhere to strict indexing programs to ensure that propagative material is clean.

Sanitation is critical. All pruning tools and equipment should be thoroughly disinfected with appropriate solutions between individual trees to prevent mechanical spread.

Early identification through regular orchard inspections is vital. If an infected tree is discovered, it should be removed and destroyed to prevent potential tool-based transmission.

There is no chemical control or treatment for the virus. Managing the disease is purely preventive and revolves around exclusion and quarantine measures.

Growers should maintain proper tree vigor through balanced fertilization and irrigation to help trees cope with stress, though this does not provide immunity or a cure.
