Symptoms
The disease primarily manifests on the leaves of Potentilla plants, showing distinct circular or irregular spots. These spots are typically brownish or dark in color, often surrounded by a darker margin.
As the infection progresses, the center of the spots tends to become lighter, fading to a gray or tan shade. Within these necrotic areas, small black fruiting bodies called pycnidia can be observed.
In high humidity, these spots frequently coalesce, covering large parts of the leaf surface. This lead to premature yellowing and eventually results in the leaves dropping off the plant.
The infection may also affect the petioles and stems, leading to deformation and weakened overall structure of the plant. A heavily affected plant loses its typical aesthetic appeal.
Severe infestations can lead to the wilting of young shoots. This significantly impairs the plant's ability to maintain its healthy growth cycle throughout the season.
Pathogen
The causal agent of this disease is the fungus Pseudodiplodia potentillae, a member of the group of imperfect fungi (Deuteromycetes). It is highly host-specific to plants of the Potentilla genus.
The fungus overwinters in the form of pycnidia located on fallen leaves and dead plant tissue remaining in the soil. These residues serve as the primary reservoir for the infection.
During the spring and summer, the pathogen releases conidia. These spores are spread through rain splashes, wind currents, and mechanical contact, landing on new healthy plant tissue.
Once settled, the spores germinate and penetrate the epidermal layers of the leaf. Once inside, the fungal mycelium begins to colonize the tissue, absorbing nutrients from the host cells.
Scientific studies indicate that the fungal lifecycle is closely tied to environmental conditions, particularly the presence of moisture which is essential for spore germination and colonization.
