Symptoms

In affected ears, individual kernels can be replaced by these large, unsightly smut galls, causing severe distortion of the entire structure.

Pathogen

Common smut is caused by the basidiomycete fungus Ustilago maydis, a specialized pathogen that affects exclusively maize crops.
