Symptoms

In the center of mature lesions, tiny black dots (pycnidia) can often be observed with the naked eye or a hand lens. These are the fruiting bodies of the fungus, confirming the presence of the pathogen.

Severe infestations lead to yellowing of the leaves and premature defoliation. This significantly reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the tree and can cause stunted growth and dieback of young twigs.

Fruit symptoms include sunken, dark spots on the rind, which can affect fruit quality and marketability. These lesions may also serve as entry points for secondary pathogens that cause rot during post-harvest storage.

Infection primarily occurs through stomata or wounds caused by insect damage, pruning, or environmental factors. Once inside, the fungal hyphae colonize the plant tissue, leading to localized necrosis and disease development.

The pathogen thrives in high-density citrus groves where microclimate conditions, such as stagnant air and moisture retention, are conducive to rapid spore production and infection cycles throughout the growing season.

Biological studies suggest that the fungus can persist in a latent form for extended periods, emerging to cause visible disease symptoms when the host plant experiences stress or when environmental conditions become optimal.

In greenhouse or nursery environments, inadequate ventilation and excessive overhead watering are common causes of outbreaks, necessitating strict control over environmental parameters to manage the disease.

The primary economic impact of this disease is the reduction in tree vigor and yield. Significant defoliation weakens the tree, leading to smaller fruit sizes and lower overall productivity for the citrus orchard.

Chronic infection lowers the tree's reserves, making it less resilient to cold weather and other environmental stresses. This can lead to branch dieback and an increased need for intensive pruning and restorative care.

Copper-based fungicides are standard in the management of Phyllosticta. Timely preventative applications, especially during wet weather, are effective at protecting new growth from initial infection.

Maintaining a balanced nutrition program, particularly ensuring adequate potassium and phosphorus levels, strengthens the plant’s structural integrity and improves its overall defense mechanisms against fungal pathogens.

Regular monitoring of orchards allows for early detection of the disease. Isolating or treating localized hotspots immediately can prevent a minor issue from escalating into a widespread orchard epidemic.
