Description

Symptoms

The primary symptom is the appearance of small, rusty or brown-colored pustules, usually found on the underside of leaves. Over time, yellow chlorotic spots may manifest on the upper leaf surface.

As the disease progresses, the pustules rupture the epidermis, releasing masses of dusty, rust-colored spores. Infected leaves often show signs of premature yellowing and curling as the fungus depletes their resources.

In severe cases, massive premature defoliation occurs, which significantly weakens the plant before the dormant season. The necrotic patches may coalesce, leading to extensive tissue damage.

The fungal life cycle involves the formation of various spore stages, which allow it to survive harsh conditions and spread efficiently. It infects living plant tissues, utilizing them for nutrients and reproductive development.

During the infection process, the fungus penetrates the leaf epidermis to form structures called uredinia and telia. These pustules serve as reservoirs for spores that are easily disseminated by wind or splashing water.

The biological cycle of the fungus is tightly linked to the phenology of Jeffersonia. Since the fungus can overwinter in infected plant debris, sanitation remains the primary strategy for limiting its survival.

The pathogen is known for its high aggressiveness, particularly in environments with high humidity. Its capacity for rapid sporulation allows it to colonize the entire canopy of a host plant in a relatively short period.

Conditions for development

High relative humidity is the most significant factor for the development of the pathogen. Frequent rainfall, morning dews, and overhead irrigation create a perfect environment for spore germination.

The most important preventive measure is the thorough removal and destruction of all plant debris in the autumn. This step drastically reduces the infection reservoir for the following season.

Ensure that plants are spaced adequately to promote proper airflow and light penetration. Avoid overhead watering; instead, apply water directly to the root zone to keep the foliage as dry as possible.

If the first symptoms of the disease are identified, apply systemic fungicides based on copper or specific triazole compounds. Treatments should be repeated every 7 to 14 days for optimal coverage.

Selecting healthy plant material and maintaining a clean growing environment are the most effective ways to prevent Phragmopyxis deglubens from establishing in your garden.

Regular monitoring of leaf health allows for the early detection of disease focal points. If detected early, manually removing the most infected leaves can help contain the spread of the fungus.
