Symptoms
The primary symptom of Phialophora wilt in carnations is the yellowing and wilting of the foliage, which often starts on one side of the plant. As the disease progresses, the leaves turn greyish and lose their turgor, leading to a stunted growth habit.
A distinctive sign is the development of brown or dark streaks in the vascular tissue of the stem. When the stem is cut cross-sectionally, a clear browning of the vascular bundles is visible, indicating restricted nutrient transport.
In advanced stages, the base of the stem near the soil line may show necrosis or small lesions. The entire plant eventually collapses and withers, often leading to rapid death under favorable conditions for the fungus.
Affected plants exhibit significantly reduced root development, with the root system showing signs of decay and brown discoloration. This impairs the plant's ability to absorb water, exacerbating the wilting process.
While external symptoms can be confused with Fusarium wilt, the specific internal browning of vascular tissues and the slow, progressive nature of the wilt are diagnostic indicators for Phialophora.
Pathogen
The disease is caused by the soil-borne fungus Phialophora mutabilis (also known as Phialophora cinerescens). It is a vascular pathogen that colonizes the xylem of the host plant.
The fungus enters the carnation through root tips or small mechanical wounds. Once inside, it mycelium spreads through the vascular system, effectively blocking the translocation of water and essential minerals.
Besides physical obstruction, the fungus produces toxins that damage the plant's metabolism, leading to rapid yellowing and death of the leaf tissues.

The presence of root-knot nematodes or other soil pests can create additional entry points, making plants significantly more susceptible to Phialophora infection.
Lack of proper sanitation practices during harvest, especially when knives are not disinfected between cuts, allows the fungus to move from plant to plant with ease.
Why it matters
This disease is considered one of the most destructive fungal infections in carnation production. It can lead to total crop failure if left unmanaged, causing significant economic losses.
The pathogen significantly reduces flower quality, rendering the stems unmarketable. Even slightly infected plants produce fewer blooms and show signs of severe stress.
Because the fungus stays in the soil for years, it forces producers to invest in costly soil sterilization processes or completely replace the growing substrate.
The hidden nature of the infection, where symptoms appear only after the fungus has established, makes it difficult to eradicate once it is introduced to a greenhouse facility.
It poses a long-term risk to land use, as affected areas may become unsuitable for carnation production for nearly a decade unless strict chemical or physical controls are applied.

The core of a successful management strategy lies in using disease-free, tissue-cultured plant material produced under strict laboratory conditions.
Pre-planting soil treatment, such as steam sterilization or fumigation with appropriate fungicides, is essential to eliminate the pathogen from the growing medium.
