Symptoms

The primary symptom of Broom downy mildew is the appearance of chlorotic, yellowing spots on the upper side of the leaves. Over time, these spots can turn brown and often become angular, being bordered by the leaf veins.

A distinctive feature is the development of a gray or purplish fuzz on the underside of the leaves. This is the sporulation of the fungus, which emerges through the stomata under high humidity.

Infected leaves soon begin to yellow, curl, and eventually drop prematurely. The infection usually starts at the base of the shrub and gradually moves upward toward younger growth.

In severe cases, the pathogen can also infect green stems and flower buds, significantly hindering the overall health and appearance of the shrub during the growing season.

The overall impact is a rapid decline in the plant's decorative appearance, leaving the branches bare and the shrub looking sparse and unhealthy.

Pathogen

The causative agent of this disease is Peronospora cytisi, an oomycete pathogen that specifically targets plants in the genus Cytisus. This fungus is a specialized parasite that requires a living host.

As an obligate parasite, it relies entirely on the nutrients obtained from the living cells of the broom shrub. It utilizes haustoria to penetrate cell walls and siphon off vital energy from the host.

The disease spreads through zoospores, which are motile spores that require a film of free water to move across plant surfaces and locate new infection sites on healthy tissues.

The pathogen survives the dormant season as oospores, which are resistant structures found in fallen foliage or soil. These spores remain viable until favorable conditions return in spring.

Within the plant tissues, the mycelium grows intercellularly, eventually causing tissue necrosis and disrupting the normal physiological processes of the affected parts of the shrub.

Conditions for development

The development of downy mildew is strongly driven by high humidity levels, ideally exceeding 80-90%. Frequent rainfall, heavy morning dew, or foggy conditions create the necessary environment.

The pathogen thrives at moderate temperatures, specifically between 15 and 22 degrees Celsius. These temperatures accelerate the incubation period and increase the severity of the outbreak.

Dense plantings that lack adequate airflow are particularly vulnerable to infections. Stagnant air allows humidity to persist on leaf surfaces for extended periods, facilitating fungal growth.

Shaded locations with limited sunlight exposure often harbor higher moisture levels, making these plants more susceptible to the rapid colonization by the fungus.

Improper watering practices, such as overhead sprinkling in the evening, provide the essential free water on leaf surfaces needed for zoospores to germinate and successfully infect the host.

Why it matters

The main harm caused by this disease is the destruction of the plant's ornamental value. Because broom is often grown for its foliage and floral display, this infection renders it unsuitable for landscaping.

By reducing the functional leaf surface, the pathogen limits the plant's ability to photosynthesize. This leads to weakened roots and decreased vigor, making the shrub more susceptible to winter stress.

Continued infection over multiple seasons can lead to the death of younger, less established specimens, forcing gardeners to replace the affected plants entirely.

The disease acts as an infectious reservoir, putting other broom plants in the vicinity at significant risk of infection if preventative measures are not taken.

Economic losses in nurseries can be substantial, as infected stock must be discarded or treated with frequent fungicide applications to meet market standards.

Protection

Effective management begins with proper site selection. Plant shrubs in locations with excellent airflow and adequate sunlight to ensure that foliage dries quickly after rain or dew.

Sanitation is crucial; remove and destroy all fallen leaves and prune infected branches to reduce the amount of pathogen inoculum available for the next season.

Apply systemic fungicides at the first sign of symptoms. Products containing metalaxyl, fosetyl-aluminum, or copper-based compounds have demonstrated effectiveness in controlling oomycete pathogens.

Rotate the chemical classes of fungicides used to prevent the development of resistance in the pathogen population, and ensure thorough coverage of both leaf surfaces.
