Symptoms
The earliest signs of Pachyascus infection include the appearance of localized dark, sunken lesions on the bark of younger branches. These lesions often expand rapidly under favorable weather conditions.
Small, dark fruiting bodies (apothecia) of the fungus may appear on the surface of the necrotic bark, usually visible as tiny, crowded pustules upon close inspection with a hand lens.
Foliar symptoms include chlorosis and premature wilting of leaves on infected branches. As the bark lesion expands and rings the branch, the foliage above the infection site will turn brown and dry up.
Cracking and peeling of the outer bark layer is common, revealing the underlying woody tissue, which may also show signs of discoloration due to the fungal mycelium colonizing the interior.
In advanced stages, the infected branch may exhibit a complete loss of vitality, becoming brittle and prone to snapping under wind pressure, which further spreads the fungal spores.
