Ophioparma is a genus of lichen that frequently colonizes the bark of various trees. It presents as crust-like growths that can vary in color from dull grey to olive-green or brownish shades.
One of the most noticeable features is how the thallus attaches itself firmly to the substrate. Unlike pathogenic fungi that penetrate deep into the phloem, Ophioparma remains primarily on the surface.
The appearance of the lichen changes significantly with the weather. During moist, rainy conditions, the thallus becomes hydrated, vibrant, and flexible, while in dry periods, it appears brittle and pale.
Initial colonization usually begins with small, circular spots that eventually merge into larger, irregular patches covering substantial areas of the trunk and primary branches.
If left unchecked, these colonies can form a thick crust that changes the texture of the bark, giving the tree a weathered and aged aesthetic appearance.
Pathogen
Ophioparma is not a true pathogen but rather a symbiotic organism composed of a fungus and an alga. It functions as a complex, self-sustaining biological unit.
As a member of the Ophioparmaceae family, it belongs to the lichenized fungi category. It survives by utilizing the tree exclusively as a physical support structure.
The fungal component provides structural integrity and water retention, while the algal component carries out photosynthesis to produce energy, making the lichen independent of the tree's nutrients.
It does not extract sap or nutrients from the host plant, distinguishing it from parasitic fungi that cause severe internal rot or vascular blockages in agricultural crops.
These organisms are highly adaptable, occupying specific ecological niches where they can tolerate environmental stressors that would be lethal to more sensitive plant species.
Conditions for development
High relative humidity is the most critical environmental factor for the survival and expansion of Ophioparma. Wet climates or stagnant air pockets strongly promote its growth.
Poor airflow within the canopy of dense orchards creates a favorable microclimate, allowing the lichen to thrive undisturbed by drying winds or intense sunlight.

The rate of bark renewal is also a determining factor. Slower-growing, older trees with stable bark provide a more permanent surface for the lichen to establish itself over many years.

Why it matters
The primary concern with Ophioparma is the mechanical obstruction of bark pores (lenticels), which may slightly impede the tree's ability to undergo gas exchange.
By trapping moisture against the bark, lichen colonies can create a persistent damp environment that becomes a breeding ground for opportunistic secondary pathogens.
The rough, crusty structure of the lichen provides excellent shelter for various orchard pests, including mite eggs, scale insects, and aphid larvae, which hibernate in these crevices.
Visible colonies are often a sign of reduced tree vigor. A healthy, rapidly growing tree produces new bark layers more frequently, which naturally sheds lichen colonies.
While the lichen itself is non-parasitic, its presence is often correlated with poor garden hygiene and suboptimal growing conditions that lower the tree's general immunity.
Protection
Mechanical removal is the most effective way to manage Ophioparma. Using a stiff brush or a specialized scraper during the dormant season can effectively clear the bark.
