The coloration of the lichen ranges from greyish to greenish-yellow tones, which provides effective camouflage against the texture of the host tree bark. These lichens can grow as solitary patches or coalesce into larger colonies covering significant surface areas.
A key indicator of its presence is the development of apothecia—fruiting bodies that are often immersed or semi-immersed within the thallus. These appear as small, dark spots scattered across the lighter surface of the lichen.
While the lichen does not mechanically damage the inner tissues of the tree, its presence alters the surface texture of the bark, making it appear rougher and less uniform over time.
During periods of high humidity, the structure of the lichen becomes more flexible and vibrant in color, making it easier for orchard managers or foresters to detect during regular health inspections.

While rarely fatal, the presence of this lichen generally indicates that the tree requires improved management or environmental adjustments to maintain optimal vigor and health.
Protection
Regular mechanical cleaning of tree trunks is an effective control measure. Using stiff brushes or scrapers to remove lichen during humid weather helps clear the bark without damaging the tree cambium.

Applying copper-based fungicides, such as Bordeaux mixture, during the dormant season (spring or autumn) helps disinfect the bark and effectively suppresses the development of lichens.
Maintaining high agricultural standards, including proper fertilization and irrigation, increases the tree's overall vigor and resistance to colonization by epiphytic organisms.
By implementing routine orchard care and early detection protocols, the need for aggressive chemical control of lichens can be minimized or eliminated entirely.
