Description

Symptoms

Early symptoms appear as small, yellowish-green spots that gradually darken to brown or reddish-brown, often surrounded by a distinct darker margin.

As the infection progresses, these spots expand and may coalesce, leading to large necrotic areas that significantly disfigure the appearance of the lily of the valley leaves.

Tiny, black, pin-point structures (fruiting bodies) become visible within the dead tissue of the spots, indicating that the fungus is actively producing spores.

Affected leaves often show symptoms of premature senescence, including yellowing and curling, as the structural integrity of the leaf lamina is compromised.

Severe infestations can lead to the wilting and collapse of the entire foliage, making the plant appear blighted long before the end of the summer season.

Pathogen

The disease is caused by the ascomycete fungus Mycosphaerella convallariae, which specifically targets plants of the Asparagaceae family, primarily Convallaria majalis.

Excessive overhead watering during the evening hours provides the necessary moisture for the pathogen to thrive and move between plants in the garden bed.

Failure to clear away dead plant debris from the previous year serves as a persistent reservoir for the fungus to restart its life cycle each spring.

Plants growing in heavily shaded or poorly drained sites are more prone to infection due to their lack of vigor and prolonged leaf wetness duration.

Why it matters

The primary impact of this disease is the reduction of the photosynthetic leaf area, which limits the energy reserves the plant can store in its rhizomes for the following year.
