These fruiting bodies typically emerge on last year's needles or fallen debris of pine and other coniferous species. In the areas where the fungus colonizes, the needles lose their vitality and turn a dull grey or brownish color, losing their characteristic luster.
As the apothecia mature, they rupture the epidermis of the needle and become clearly visible to the naked eye. This damage frequently leads to premature needle drop, resulting in the thinning of branches, especially in the lower parts of the tree canopy.
Microscopic examination reveals the presence of long, thread-like ascospores that are released into the environment. This process is a key indicator of the fungus's active reproductive phase and its ability to spread to healthy needles in the vicinity.
The severity of the symptoms is often linked to the density of the canopy and local humidity levels. In densely planted areas where airflow is restricted, the symptoms appear more rapidly and manifest more severely than in well-ventilated stands.
