The order Lichinales belongs to the class Lecanoromycetes and is composed of lichenized fungi. In an agricultural context, it is critical to clarify that these organisms are not plant pathogens or disease agents.
These fungi form stable symbiotic relationships with cyanobacteria. Unlike parasitic fungi, they do not infiltrate plant cells or siphon off nutrients from the host organism to sustain their growth.
They act as epiphytes, utilizing the surface of tree bark or rock faces as a substrate for attachment. Their biological structure is specialized for gathering moisture and nutrients from the atmosphere rather than from a living plant host.
The visual presence of these lichens on agricultural or ornamental trees is often misinterpreted by growers as a sign of decay. However, the fungi remain strictly on the outer surface and do not interfere with the plant's vascular system.
Consequently, there is no biological mechanism by which Lichinales could act as a vector for infection or cause pathological damage to trees, bushes, or crops in any environment.
Conditions for development
The development of Lichinales is strictly determined by environmental purity and atmospheric humidity. They thrive in regions with excellent air quality and consistent moisture levels.
Their distribution is highly sensitive to air pollution, particularly high concentrations of sulfur dioxide. Because of this sensitivity, they serve as excellent natural indicators of the environmental health of an ecosystem.
They prefer surfaces that provide long-term stability and sufficient moisture retention, such as mature, rough-barked trees in wooded areas. Old-growth habitats are the most common places for these organisms to establish large, healthy populations.
Environmental stability, including the absence of disruptive chemical treatments, is essential for their colonization. Intense agricultural practices, such as the routine application of fungicides, will typically eradicate these lichens within a treated area.
They tend to colonize shaded areas, as their associated cyanobacteria perform photosynthesis effectively under lower light intensities compared to vascular plants. Their growth cycle is extremely slow, often taking years to cover noticeable areas.
