Symptoms

Lecanora is a genus of crustose lichens that frequently colonize the bark of various woody plants. Visually, they appear as patches that adhere tightly to the bark, forming a crust-like structure.

The color of these colonies typically ranges from grayish to white or yellowish-green. In the center of the lichen body, one can often distinguish small disk-shaped structures, known as apothecia, which are the reproductive organs.

These lichens can grow in circular patterns or merge into irregular, large patches covering significant portions of the trunk and primary branches. This creates a distinct textural change on the tree bark.

Unlike parasitic fungi, Lecanora does not penetrate deep into the living tissue of the tree. However, it significantly alters the surface appearance, often signaling a change in the microclimate of the tree canopy.

Their presence on young trees or rapidly growing twigs is usually a clear indication of poor aeration, high humidity, or lack of proper pruning and maintenance in the orchard.

Pathogen

Lecanora is a symbiotic organism consisting of a fungus and an alga. It functions as an epiphyte, meaning it uses the tree as a mechanical support rather than a source of nutrients.

The fungus provides the structural form and protection from intense light, while the algal component carries out photosynthesis, providing the necessary energy for the lichen's growth.

Reproduction is primarily achieved through spores, which are released and carried by wind or rain to new surfaces. Upon landing on suitable bark, they germinate and form a new colony.

These organisms are remarkably resilient, capable of surviving long periods of drought or cold. They obtain their required minerals and moisture from the atmosphere and ambient dust.

While not a disease in the sense of a necrotrophic infection, the accumulation of lichen creates a permanent biological cover that modifies the surface chemistry and gas exchange of the host's bark.

Conditions for development

The primary factor facilitating Lecanora growth is persistent moisture on the bark. This is most common in dense orchards where air circulation is restricted by thick foliage.

Shaded and humid garden sites are particularly prone to colonization. Lichens thrive in microenvironments where dew remains for long periods, preventing the bark from drying out.

Poor orchard management, specifically the lack of thinning and sanitary pruning, is the leading cause of heavy lichen growth. It creates a stable, humid environment ideal for lichen establishment.

Mature trees with rough, fissured bark provide the perfect substrate. The small cracks and indentations protect the spores and facilitate their adhesion to the surface.

Low light intensity, combined with poor water drainage in the soil, promotes an environment where lichen growth can flourish, gradually covering the lower parts of the trunk and scaffold limbs.

Why it matters

The primary concern regarding Lecanora is that it creates a habitat for pests. The dense lichen cover serves as a refuge for scale insects, mites, and aphid eggs during winter.

The physical presence of the lichen layer may slightly impede bark respiration. While it does not extract sap, it can interfere with the bark's natural renewal and gas exchange processes.

Accumulated lichen holds moisture against the bark for extended periods, which can create conditions conducive to the development of secondary bacterial or fungal rot infections.

In ornamental and high-value fruit production, the aesthetic impact is significant. Trees covered in heavy lichen growth often appear neglected and may show signs of reduced vigor or stunted growth.

If left uncontrolled, the lichen spreads across the entire tree framework, further reducing the efficiency of the bark and potentially harboring colonies of wood-boring insects.

Protection

Regular pruning is the most effective preventative measure. Thinning the canopy improves airflow and light penetration, making the bark environment less hospitable for lichen growth.

Mechanical removal can be performed using specialized scrapers or brushes. This should be done during dormant seasons, ensuring that loose lichen and debris are collected and removed from the orchard.

Post-cleaning, the application of a 3–5% solution of iron sulfate or copper-based fungicides can help sanitize the bark and prevent the regrowth of lichen spores.

Applying a horticultural lime wash (whitewash) to trunks and base limbs acts as an effective deterrent, protecting the bark from both lichen attachment and potential sunscald.

Maintaining overall tree health through proper fertilization and irrigation promotes active bark growth and self-renewal, which naturally keeps the surface free of most epiphytic lichens.
