Description

Symptoms

Initial symptoms include small, darkened, and slightly sunken lesions on the bark of young shoots and branches. These spots gradually expand into larger necrotic areas.

A diagnostic characteristic is the formation of small, black, erumpent bumps on the bark surface. These are the pycnidia releasing fungal spores.

Infected branches often exhibit wilting leaves that turn brown but remain attached to the stem for a long period, which is a distinctive symptom of this necrosis.

As the disease progresses, the bark may crack and peel, revealing the underlying woody tissue. Deep cankers can form, eventually girdling the branch and causing its death.

Pathogen

The causal agent of walnut juglanconiosis is the ascomycete fungus Juglanconis juglandina. This pathogen specifically targets the bark and cambium of walnut trees.

The fungus persists in infected branches as mycelium, surviving in both living and dead tissues. It remains viable through the winter, ready to produce new spores in the spring.

Its life cycle involves the development of pycnidia (spore-bearing structures) beneath the epidermis. Once mature, these structures rupture the bark, releasing conidia into the environment.

Dissemination occurs primarily via water splash during rain events and wind currents. Insects visiting the tree can also mechanically transfer spores to healthy tissue.

As an opportunistic pathogen, J. juglandina often exploits weakened trees or open wounds caused by pruning or environmental damage to establish infection.

Conditions for development

High humidity and frequent rainfall are the primary drivers for disease development. Moisture is essential for spore germination and movement across the canopy.

The optimal temperature range for the pathogen's growth is between +18°C and +25°C, making the late spring and early summer periods most critical for infection.

Poor orchard management, such as excessive tree density and poor air circulation, creates an environment where the humidity remains high, favoring the spread of the disease.

Environmental stress, such as drought or frost damage, weakens the walnut tree's immune system, making it more susceptible to fungal colonization.

Mechanical injuries to the bark provide direct access for the pathogen to colonize the tree, emphasizing the importance of proper pruning techniques.

Why it matters

Juglanconiosis poses a major threat to walnut production, as severe infections can lead to the death of the entire tree if the trunk becomes girdled.

The disease significantly reduces fruit quality and yields, as necrotic branches fail to transport nutrients efficiently to the developing nuts.

Infected trees suffer from reduced cold hardiness, making them highly vulnerable to winter injury and leading to increased branch dieback every year.
