Symptoms
The most distinctive symptom of Hymenomonosis is the appearance of a slimy, pinkish or yellowish film on the soil surface and the lower parts of the plant stems. This growth is easily visible and often spreads rapidly in humid environments.
Plants affected by the pathogen show signs of wilting despite adequate moisture levels. This occurs because the algal film on the soil surface prevents root respiration, leading to oxygen starvation and decreased water uptake.
Leaf tissue often becomes chlorotic and loses its natural gloss. As the disease progresses, the lower leaves may drop prematurely, and young shoots may show stunted or distorted growth patterns.
Root system examination usually reveals darkening or necrosis, as the poor soil aeration caused by the algal mat promotes secondary bacterial rots. The plants fail to thrive and remain small compared to healthy specimens.

It primarily affects greenhouse crops, ornamentals, and young vegetable seedlings. The pathogen thrives in substrates with poor drainage and persistent waterlogging, where it forms dense, slimy colonies.
Through its metabolic activity, the alga creates a film that disrupts normal gas exchange in plant tissues. This physiological stress makes the host susceptible to further damage and secondary infections.
Classified as a golden alga, this organism has gained attention in commercial plant production as a factor that diminishes seedling vigor and overall aesthetic quality in nurseries.
Conditions for development
Excessive humidity is the primary driver of Hymenomonas roseola development. Persistent waterlogging in pots or trays creates an environment where this alga can rapidly multiply and colonize plant surfaces.
Temperatures ranging from 18°C to 25°C are optimal for the growth of these colonies. While lower temperatures may slow their spread, they do not eliminate the pathogen from the environment.
Poor ventilation within greenhouses leads to high humidity and stagnant air, which significantly encourages the development of algal films. Furthermore, using non-sterile soil mixes often introduces the pathogen into a clean environment.
High salt concentrations in irrigation water can sometimes provide a competitive advantage to certain types of coccolithophores. Additionally, poor sunlight exposure weakens the host's natural resistance, making it more prone to colonization.
The pathogen is easily transmitted via contaminated water sources, equipment, or by splashing during watering. Once established in a greenhouse, it can quickly spread across multiple benches if sanitary protocols are ignored.
Why it matters
The primary economic impact of Hymenomonosis is the loss of commercial value for ornamental plants. Any visible algal film on the stem or soil immediately renders the product unacceptable for high-end retail markets.
The pathogen causes significant growth suppression, which disrupts production timelines in commercial nurseries. Seedlings fail to reach the required size for transplanting on time, leading to financial losses.
By compromising root system health, the disease makes plants less resilient to transplanting stress and other biotic or abiotic factors. This results in higher mortality rates during the sensitive early growth stages.
Prolonged presence of the alga alters the physical and chemical properties of the substrate. This degradation makes it difficult to maintain proper nutrient availability for the plant's developing root system.
Without intervention, the infection can spread across the entire greenhouse, potentially necessitating the destruction of large batches of nursery stock. The costs associated with soil replacement and cleanup are significant.
Protection
Adjusting the irrigation schedule is the most effective preventative measure. Allowing the surface of the substrate to dry out slightly between waterings disrupts the environment necessary for algal colonization.
Improving greenhouse ventilation and ensuring proper drainage are critical steps in managing the disease. Lowering the overall humidity levels prevents the formation and expansion of algal films on soil surfaces.
Surface cultivation or light raking of the substrate helps break the algal mat, allowing oxygen to reach the roots and preventing the pathogen from establishing a firm foothold.
In cases of significant infestation, the use of approved algicides can effectively eliminate the pathogen. Regular disinfection of tools, trays, and benches is essential to prevent the spread of Hymenomonas roseola.
Quarantining new stock upon arrival and utilizing sterilized growing media are fundamental practices for preventing outbreaks. If infection occurs, affected plants should be isolated, and the soil around them should be carefully removed.
