Description
Symptoms
The most notable symptom is the appearance of small, raised black bumps on the bark of twigs, branches, or trunks. These are the fruiting bodies of the fungus arranged in groups.
The bark at the infection site becomes necrotic, discolored, and begins to crack or flake away. This damage often exposes the underlying woody tissue to further decay.
Dieback of branches is a common progression of the disease. Leaves on infected limbs may wilt, turn yellow, and fall prematurely as the fungus disrupts the flow of water and nutrients.
Beneath the bark, the wood may show signs of decay, appearing darker or softer than healthy wood. In humid conditions, mycelial mats may become visible under peeling bark.

Pathogen

The mycelium colonizes the bark and cambium layers, slowly decaying the tissue. Over time, the fungus breaks down the lignin in the wood, leading to structural damage.
