Description
Symptoms
The first symptoms of sainfoin leaf spot include the appearance of small, round, yellowish spots on the upper surface of the leaves.
As the disease progresses, these spots turn into dark brown or brownish-black lesions, often surrounded by a distinct, lighter-colored margin.
The most diagnostic feature is found on the underside of the leaf, where black, shiny, raised stromatic cushions develop within the spots.
Heavily infected leaves lose their vigor, yellow rapidly, and eventually drop off, significantly reducing the plant's overall photosynthetic capacity.
In cases of severe infection, lesions may coalesce, covering large parts of the leaf tissue and causing extensive premature defoliation of the sainfoin stand.
Pathogen
The disease is caused by the fungus Diachora onobrychidis, a member of the Phyllachorales order, which is a specialized parasite of sainfoin.
The pathogen overwinters as stromatic structures on infected plant debris left in the field from the previous growing season.
