During the growing season, symptoms appear as stunted shoot growth, shortened internodes, and chlorosis. Leaves may show symptoms of water stress due to the disruption of the vascular system.
When the trunk or cordons are cross-sectioned, characteristic necrosis is revealed. The internal wood exhibits dark brown to black staining, which indicates the extent of the fungal colonization.
In spring, minute black bumps (perithecia) can be observed on the surface of the dead bark. Under humid conditions, these structures release spores that can be spread easily to neighboring healthy vines.
