Description

Symptoms

The most visible symptom of Cryptovalsa infection is the stunted growth of shoots during the spring season. These shoots often have shortened internodes and display chlorotic, deformed leaves that may show signs of early necrosis at the margins.

Affected vines often exhibit poor fruit set, with inflorescences drying up and falling off prematurely. In severe cases, the entire vine canopy may look thin and sickly, struggling to develop properly as the season progresses.

Upon cutting into the infected cordons or the trunk, a diagnostic sign of the disease is revealed: wedge-shaped areas of necrotic, dark, or black wood. This internal discoloration is a hallmark of the fungal colonization.

As the disease progresses, the bark on the main trunks may crack and peel, exposing the deteriorating wood beneath. In some instances, small, black, pin-head-sized fruiting bodies appear on the surface of the dead bark.

Ultimately, individual arms or the entire vine may collapse and die, often appearing suddenly in the middle of the growing season or after the winter dormancy period.

Pathogen

Cryptovalsa is a genus of fungi belonging to the Ascomycota phylum, responsible for wood-decaying diseases in various woody plants. The most significant pathogen in this group is Cryptovalsa ampelina, which primarily attacks grapevines.

These fungi are xylotrophic, meaning they colonize and break down the woody tissue of the host plant. By destroying the vascular structure, the fungus disrupts the flow of water and essential nutrients, eventually leading to the death of the infected plant parts.

Infection typically occurs through open wounds resulting from pruning, mechanical injury, or environmental damage. Once inside, the mycelium spreads slowly through the permanent structure of the vine, often remaining undetected for several years.

The fungal life cycle involves both sexual and asexual stages, allowing it to produce spores that are easily disseminated. These spores are released during wet weather and can travel significant distances via wind and rain splashes.

Old or abandoned vines often serve as the primary reservoir for the fungus, as they harbor reproductive structures known as perithecia, which produce infectious spores throughout the season.

Conditions for development

Cryptovalsa thrives in conditions characterized by high humidity and moderate temperatures. The release of spores is triggered by rainfall, making pruning during wet periods extremely risky for the vineyard's health.

The fungus is most active within the temperature range of 15 to 25 degrees Celsius. However, its spores are resilient and can remain viable for extended periods, even under fluctuating environmental conditions.

Fresh pruning wounds, particularly those with a diameter larger than 1-2 centimeters, provide the perfect entry point for the fungus. If these wounds are not protected, the probability of infection increases significantly.

Plants that are stressed by over-cropping, poor soil nutrition, or inadequate water management are naturally more susceptible to infection. A weakened vine has less defense capability against invasive wood-decaying pathogens.

In regions where pruning is performed during the winter without subsequent protective measures, the fungus has ample opportunity to infect the wood before the vine can initiate its natural healing process.

Why it matters

The primary economic impact of Cryptovalsa is the progressive loss of productivity and the permanent removal of infected vine structures. This forces growers to implement expensive and time-consuming renovation strategies for their vineyards.

Because the fungus destroys the vascular system, the vine's ability to transport water and minerals is severely hindered. This leads to lower yields, poorer berry quality, and a general decline in the commercial value of the crop.

Cryptovalsa behaves as a chronic disease that slowly exhausts the plant's resources. By the time visual symptoms appear, the internal damage is often irreversible, making the management of the disease particularly challenging.

The disease tends to spread within a vineyard if left unmanaged, as spores from infected trunks can easily infect surrounding healthy vines. This necessitates increased surveillance and, often, more frequent chemical applications.

For young plantings, infection can be devastating, as it can stunt growth or lead to the death of the vines before they even reach full maturity, resulting in significant investment losses.

Protection

Effective management begins with strict pruning hygiene. All large pruning wounds should be immediately protected with fungicide-based pastes or sealants to prevent the entry of fungal spores into the fresh tissue.

Sanitation is critical; all dead or visibly infected wood must be removed from the vineyard and destroyed, preferably by burning, to reduce the overall inoculum pressure in the area.

Tools used for pruning must be disinfected regularly, preferably after every vine, using alcohol or other approved disinfecting agents to prevent the mechanical transmission of the pathogen between healthy plants.

Promoting vine vigor through balanced nutrition and proper irrigation helps the plants develop robust health, enabling them to better defend against or tolerate colonization by the fungus.

  • Apply fungicidal protectants to all pruning wounds.
  • Promptly remove and incinerate diseased woody parts.
  • Disinfect pruning equipment between individual vines.
  • Avoid pruning during wet or rainy weather conditions.
  • Monitor vine health for early signs of wood necrosis.
