Description
Symptoms
The initial symptoms include small, irregular yellow or brown spots on the leaves. These spots gradually expand into larger necrotic lesions, often surrounded by a dark brown margin.
Under conditions of high humidity, small pinkish or cream-colored pustules (acervuli) appear in the center of the lesions. These are the fungal fruiting bodies releasing new spores into the environment.
As the disease progresses, the leaf tissue dries out and becomes brittle. Infected petioles often collapse, causing the entire leaf or the whole rosette to wilt, regardless of soil moisture levels.
In severe cases, the fungus attacks the crown or stem of the violet, causing dark, sunken lesions. This often leads to the death of the plant as the vascular system is compromised.
Flowers may also show symptoms, including discoloration, deformation, and premature death of buds. These signs are often the most noticeable to home gardeners and collectors.
Pathogen
The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Colletotrichum violae-tricoloris. It is a highly specialized pathogen that targets various species within the Viola genus, leading to significant tissue damage.
The fungus survives in infected plant debris, soil, and on seeds. It spreads rapidly through conidia, which are transmitted via splashing water, contaminated tools, and air currents within greenhouses or indoor growing areas.
Once the conidia land on a leaf surface, they germinate under favorable conditions and penetrate the plant tissue. The fungus then establishes a mycelial network that secretes enzymes to break down plant cells.
The disease cycle concludes with the development of acervuli, which are specialized structures producing new spores. This ensures the continuous infection cycle throughout the growing season.
Due to its high level of host specificity, this pathogen can persist in a collection indefinitely if sanitation practices are not strictly enforced. Its ability to overwinter in soil makes it a persistent threat.
Conditions for development
High relative humidity (above 80%) is the most critical environmental factor promoting the development of violet anthracnose. Stagnant air and poor ventilation significantly exacerbate the infection rate.
Temperatures between +22°C and +26°C are ideal for the rapid growth of Colletotrichum. In such conditions, the disease can spread from a single plant to an entire collection within days.
Overcrowded conditions prevent leaves from drying quickly after watering, creating a microclimate conducive to fungal spore germination. Lack of light can also stress the plants, weakening their natural defenses.
Physical injuries caused by insects, such as thrips or mites, provide easy entry points for the pathogen. Similarly, accidental tearing of leaves during handling or repotting increases the risk of infection.
The use of unsterilized growing media or recycled pots without proper cleaning is a common way to introduce the fungus into a new environment.
Why it matters
Anthracnose causes severe aesthetic damage, rendering the plants unsuitable for display or commercial sale. The rapid necrosis of leaves significantly impairs the plant's ability to photosynthesize.
The disease weakens the overall plant vigor, making it susceptible to opportunistic secondary pathogens, such as soft rot bacteria, which can accelerate the death of the specimen.
For professional nurseries, an outbreak of anthracnose can lead to heavy financial losses due to the need for large-scale disposal of infected stock and the costs of disinfection.
The loss of rare or prize-winning cultivars is a major concern for collectors. Once infected, plants require intensive care and may never fully regain their original vitality or blooming performance.
The persistence of the pathogen in the soil means that the cost of disease management includes not only chemical treatments but also the complete replacement of growing media and cleaning of equipment.
Protection
The most important control measure is the immediate isolation of any suspected plants. Quarantine new additions to your collection for at least 3–4 weeks before placing them with established plants.
Improve cultural practices by ensuring proper air circulation and avoiding overhead watering. Use bottom watering or capillary mats while maintaining a balanced moisture level in the substrate.
Fungicides containing active ingredients such as mancozeb, tebuconazole, or systemic products designed for leaf spot diseases are effective for treatment. Apply them according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Sanitation is key; regularly remove and destroy any yellowing or necrotic leaves. Always disinfect your tools with isopropyl alcohol or a bleach solution after working with each plant.
Maintain plant health through appropriate light levels and balanced fertilization. Strong, healthy plants are significantly more resistant to initial infections by opportunistic fungi.
