Symptoms

Early symptoms appear as small, dark, water-soaked spots on the cotyledons or young stems of the plant, which gradually enlarge into distinct lesions.

On mature stems, the lesions often become deep, necrotic cankers that may encircle the stem, leading to stem weakness and potential breakage.

Leaves exhibit irregular dark brown spots with a lighter center, and in severe cases, the foliage may curl, wither, and drop prematurely.

During periods of high humidity, the lesions develop visible pinkish or black spore masses, which are a definitive sign of the fungus's active sporulation.

Root rot symptoms can also occur if the pathogen spreads to the lower stem base, causing stunting and overall plant decline.

Pathogen

The causative agent of jute anthracnose is the pathogenic fungus Colletotrichum corchorum. This fungus is highly adapted to tropical and subtropical climates where jute is primarily cultivated.

The pathogen survives primarily in infected plant debris left in the soil after harvest and can be transmitted through contaminated seeds.

Under favorable conditions, the fungus produces conidia, which are asexual spores that spread rapidly through water splashes, rain, and wind.
